Fig. 69 is a basic practice exercise which illustrates how potting one red often releases another to make that one pottable in turn.

See how far you can get in taking five reds and five blacks.

Breakbuilding with Other Colours

Although the black plays an important part in most big breaks, there are many occasions when it is tied up among a cluster of other balls, or is awkwardly placed on a cushion. There are, in addition, countless occasions when the position of the other balls makes it impossible, or not worthwhile, to attempt to get position on the black.

The pink is a useful ball because it is easily pottable from its spot into two corner and two middle pockets. In the modern professional game, middle pocket potting is of an altogether higher standard than it used to be.

A useful practice exercise is to place the pink, or any other ball, on the pink spot, and attempt to pot it fifty times in succession. In this way you will memorize various potting angles and also help your positional play.

The blue can also be an invaluable ball with which to link a break together. As Fig. 70 shows, the black and pink are hemmed in, and thus, in potting the red, the idea is to get position slightly baulkside of the blue so that you can easily take the cue ball up for another loose red. Play with screw and a little right-hand side to widen the angle that the cue ball takes when it hits the side cushion. If you play without this touch of side, you will have to screw nearer the middle pocket (which can be dangerous if you slightly overscrew), or bring the cue ball further away from the side cushion, in towards the blue (which can leave you too close to the blue and force you to pot it at an acute angle).
